Unchecked Staff Stress and the Bottom Line

Unchecked Staff Stress and the Bottom Line

Unchecked Staff Stress in the workplace can drain the energy out of the office, greatly reduce productivity and increase illness and absenteeism.

Stress Symptoms in the Workplace Include:Man, Employee, Office, Manager, Good, Morning

  • waning energy
  • fatigue
  • burnout
  • job resentment
  • cynicism
  • Negativity

Do we accept this as the typical cycle of work life?

As the leader of your team, what can you do to either prevent or stem the tide before it becomes unmanageable?

Beyond some of the obvious sources of this stress, there are more clandestine causes to consider.

Sarah Torres-Ferrick a human resources expert at HR Circle Online identifies the following causes.

  1. Conflicting and unclear demands from the boss. In my early career I recall times that I was given an assignment that I didn’t fully understand and not wanting to appear less than inadequate; said nothing.
Bosses need to be as specific as possible and ask the employee how they plan to proceed and invite them to trust their own skills; giving them decision-making control. Assure them that your door is open and there are no “dumb” questions. This alone can avoid so much anxiety and pain for everyone.
  2. Exorbitant work loads. It has become common to tackle company functions with less than adequate staff due to attrition or budget restraints or increased business. While adding staff may appear costly, it may end up costing more due to decreased productivity in the long run. A very effective strategy is to review all the employees responsibilities to gain a comprehensive understanding of their workload. This may enlighten you as to the overwhelming responsibilities whether real or perceived.

The key is to prioritize their duties, remove unproductive tasks when possible, and when appropriate implement a more efficient approach to certain assignments. Reducing the workload can greatly improve attitude and productivity.

Next time we’ll discuss Work-Life Balance and granting certain Decision-Making Control.

How You can Smash away Anger and Frustrations in a Rage Room

What happens after someone smashes away anger and frustrations in a Rage Room?
Releasing anger and frustrations in a rage room

“That’s Amazing!”

“That was Awesome!”

These are the exclamations expressed by over 95% of the people who exit the rage room after a 25 minute session of breaking stuff.

At Simply Smashing, “a Rage Release Room” we offer recreational and therapeutic destruction of inanimate objects. Two-thirds come in just to have a great time doing what they’ve always wanted to do without consequence. The rest come in to alleviate all levels of stress from a bad day at work to a tragedy in their life. Therapists and life coaches often come in to let go of depression, anxieties, anger and frustrations. Over 60% of our patrons are women.

I had no idea how profound an experience this would be for so many people.

I’d like to share 2 stories that made a huge impression on  me…

A woman came in with her 8 year old son twice. Just 6 weeks after his father was diagnosed with cancer, he passed away. The boy was so angry and confused — pivoting between depression and acting out. Mom was dealing with her own grief and wanted to do anything she could to help her son.

Because Simply Smashing is “a safe place to lose control”, they yelled, screamed and even cried together. They finished and came out with a huge satisfied smile on their faces.

Facing Cancer Anger and Frustrations

A woman of 28, wife, mother of two young children, found out she had untreatable, terminal cancer. She made an appointment for her and her best friend from back east, who she just picked up at the airport. Immediately afterwards, they were planning to drive up the west coast to spend what was most likely their last time together. She was handling things with so much courage and acceptance. She said the silver lining was that now she could spend the little time she had left with the people she loved, doing things she always wanted to do but had put off.

I had the honor to see what they wrote on the blackboard to cast off the remaining anger that was not welcome on their quest. It is very touching and inspiring.

How to Deal with a Breakup or Divorce: Have a Party!

Getting over a Divorce or BreakupDivorce and legal marital separations are two of the most stressful times in a person’s life. A breakup, may not have the legal the ramifications that a broken marriage does, but, nonetheless it’s stressful.

“The stress associated with these events have a significant impact on health. The disease rate for chronic diseases such as cancer, coronary disease, and diabetes, increases by 20% while a person is experiencing a divorce.”

~Kirsten Schuder, Mental Health Professional (Source: https://stress.lovetoknow.com/stress-triggers/what-are-most-stressful-life-events)

The movie, The Divorce Party, came out in February 2019, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Here’s the trailer:

“Why Not Have a Party? A Divorce Party?”

Sitting at home trying to drown your sorrows away will only make it worse.

“There’s proof that when you’re super bummed about the loss of a relationship, surrounding yourself with friends can give you a boost.

‘Research shows that people who have reminders of being appreciated experience less pain than those who don’t,’ explains Guy Winch, PhD, author of How to Fix a Broken Heart.”

When a friend of mine heard about Simply Smashing Rage Room she said, “I wish it would have been around when I was going through my divorce! I wanted to break something SO BAD!”

Here at Simply Smashing, you have a safe place to lose control.

breakup-divorce-partyWhat’s really cool about throwing a divorce or breakup party at Simply Smashing is that we can put a picture of your ex on a plate or in a frame and you can smash it against the wall along with anything else that reminds you of your former mate.

It could be, if it was an amicable split-up (if there is such a thing), that you can have it together and both invite friends. Or it could be some of your best pals just getting together to support you and have fun at the same time. (Sorry, no booze allowed, but you can go to the bar next door afterwards if you like.)

How to Take a 10-minute Break to Relax Your Mind

We depend on our mind to be focused to function in our daily lives, yet we ignore it. We get stressed.

In this Ted Talk, mindfulness expert Andy Puddicombe tells how just 10-minutes a day of relaxing your mind and thinking about nothing can help you become better focused and productive.

You know, the mind whizzes away like a washing machine going round and round, lots of difficult, confusing emotions, and we don’t really know how to deal with that. And the sad fact is that we are so distracted that we’re no longer present in the world in which we live. We miss out on the things that are most important to us, and the crazy thing is that everybody just assumes, that’s the way life is, so we’ve just kind of got to get on with it. That’s really not how it has to be…

…And the beauty of it is that even though it need only take about 10 minutes a day, it impacts our entire life. But we need to know how to do it. We need an exercise. We need a framework to learn how to be more mindful. That’s essentially what meditation is. It’s familiarizing ourselves with the present moment. But we also need to know how to approach it in the right way to get the best from it. And that’s what these are for, in case you’ve been wondering, because most people assume that meditation is all about stopping thoughts, getting rid of emotions, somehow controlling the mind, but actually it’s quite different from that. It’s more about stepping back, sort of seeing the thought clearly, witnessing it coming and going, emotions coming and going without judgment, but with a relaxed, focused mind.

We have another way to de-stress – the Rage Room! It’s a safe place where you go to lose control. Release all your anxiety, anger, frustrations and STRESS!

Now, we’re not saying you should throw a coffee mug at a coworker if you get mad at work – you can throw things around things at an anger room. These stress-relieving rooms are becoming more and more popular, and Teresa Strasser’s showing you why.

Also known as anger rooms, these palaces built for smashing have been around since the late 2000’s, and ever since, people have been flocking to put on visors and overalls and get to letting out their inner frustrations with the help of some organized destruction.

Well, don’t walk in and start smashing the front desk, but once you get into your rage release room, you’ll be able to break things however you want – smash them against walls, take a bat to them, yell, scream, whatever feels best for letting out those angry feelings.

While you shouldn’t consider anger rooms your go-to method for stress therapy, there’s nothing wrong with periodically tapping into your primal, breaking urges. So, visit an anger room near you today to get hardcore with your stress relief.
